Though the world throws a lot of unexpected stress, tough decisions, bad timing and more; there is one thing that will always be there to express every one of our emotions and brighten up our day... music! With so many artists, producers, groups, genres and songs coming out every day, the truth remains undeniable that music is one of the most popular and influential forms of expression. However, there is one thing that seems to remain frustrating and worrisome: our music libraries. Whether you use iTunes or any form of a file collective, the organization and search for more songs remains exhausting. As a hip hop enthusiast and creator/author of multiple music websites, I have spent countless hours searching databases for new music, finding hacks to improve my music library and searching for ways to enhance my musical experience. Today, I will share some of my advice on how you can improve your music library and overall listening experience.
1. Step Away from the Apple Store!
Many people rely solely on the Apple Store, radio or word of mouth to find songs that they may like. However, there are some other sources that will not fail you when it comes to finding new, interesting songs.
The first places I usually check are Soundcloud or Spotify, I'm sure you've heard of them, you may even have accounts with them, but I doubt you've taken full advantage of what they have to offer. These services allow you to not only post your own music but they also gives you the chance to: listen to other people's music and see what they are listening to, get the latest songs and albums, and reach back into the depths of music to hear songs you may have forgotten about..A sure way to find great music is to follow your favorite artists and especially DJs/ Producers and see what music they post and what music they "like".
The next place to go would be daily music blogs. These blogs' mission is to deliver new music as soon as they can as well as introducing us to flourishing artists, albums and much more. You've all probably heard of the more well known sites like:XXLMag, Complex, and Source but, there are also, however, many other amazing blogs and websites that you may not have heard of like: IllRoots and 2DopeBoyz.
2. Organizing Your Library
A huge part of enjoying your music comes in how you structure it, this might sound a bit extreme but believe me, it works.
The mistake a lot of us make is that we get so excited about a new album or few songs that we keep listening to it on repeat until we end up getting annoyed with it.
Make Playlists for Different Moods or Situations. There's no problem with listening to a new song a few times after you get it, or listening to an album/mixtape all the way through a few times, however, that can get boring. Playlists are an easy way to structure your music, a few suggestions for playlists: Twerk (excuse my ratchetness but this one comes in handy, I promise), Sleep, Relaxing, 90s Hip Hop, New York Rappers, Trap Music... etc.
Delete! We all have music that is either repeated, the wrong version, or we just flat out hate the song. Go through your library one day when you're bored and just delete these defective items. Don't get too happy with the delete button and just erase a song because it's annoying you at the moment... you might miss it when it's gone.
There really isn't much to it besides organizing and branching out. Go out and try new genres, artists, websites, mixtapes etc. The worst that can happen is that you don't like it... then you can simply delete it.
It's really that easy, take a weekend or a day off and begin searching for music in new places, make a few playlists and delete some songs you really don't like! You'll be surprised how much happier you are with a stress free music library.
Good Luck and Happy Listening!
